The tuxedos have been associated with formal functions since time immemorial. I only got to wear a tux a few times in my life, and only when it was strictly required, because they are actually very expensive, most especially those tailored by well known designers.
When people wear tuxedos and gowns in a party, the event becomes even more important than it is, and the place turns into a place of class, elegance and glamor. Even the not so good-natured and best looking individuals look more respectable, dignified and neat, when wearing a top of the line tuxedo. It makes gentlemen out of the rugged and unshaven men. Is it really the tux???
